Indonesia targets 15 million visitors next year

Indonesia continues to set itself ambitious tourism targets, with plans announced to attract an additional three million annual visitors next year.

The Indonesian Tourism Ministry is now targeting for 15m international arrivals in 2017, up from an expected 12m this year. By 2019, the country is aiming to attract 20m overseas visitors.

The latest target for 2017 was outlined by I Gde Pitana, deputy for international tourism development at the country’s Tourism Ministry, who was speaking at the Indonesian House of Representatives.

“The performance of arriving foreign tourists to Indonesia achieved 6.23 million by the end of July. This total, represents 53% or half of the target of 12 million foreign tourist arrivals for this year. We are certain that by year’s end the target will be achieved. We wish to increase a further three million tourists so that in 2017 we will welcome 15 million tourists,” he was quoted saying by local media.

One of the main driving forces behind Indonesia’s tourism growth is expected to be its visa waiver scheme, which is now in place for the majority of countries, including all major tourist source markets. The country welcomed 10.4m international visitors in 2015.
