GHM plans major move into Taiwan

Asian luxury hotel group, GHM, has signed a new deal that will see it launch in Taiwan for the first time.
A contract with Taiwanese business development company, Elements Innovation Co, will see the development of three new upscale hotels in Zhudong, approximately one hour’s drive from Taipei.

The Chedi Club, The Chedi and The Serai properties will form part of the huge, 500,000m² Eutopia mountain resort development, which is being created on the edges of Shei-Pa National Park. Overlooking Wuzhi Mountain, the development is one of the biggest hospitality projects ever undertaken in Taiwan, and will see the addition of more than 300 rooms, suites and villas, plus a range of high-end facilities.

The Chedi Club will feature 25 villas spread among a maple forest, while The Chedi will offer 92 rooms and suites with mountain views, plus restaurants, meeting rooms, a spa, and an infinity-edged swimming pool. The Serai will be the largest property of the three, offering 200 rooms and suites.

In addition to the hotels, the Eutopia complex will include a wildlife eco-park, a traditional Taiwanese village with teahouse, a winery, art galleries, a theatre, restaurants, a medical spa and an open-air shopping mall.

“This region is an incredibly rich reward for travellers who, today, may be heading to Japan and Korea for an experience of East Asia,” said GHM’s President, Hans R. Jenni. “Taiwan is a relatively unexploited but compelling destination option and in Eutopia, we have the vehicle to create a unique travel experience and to draw greater interest to Taiwan.”

This venture agreement marks the latest phase of GHM’s expansion in East Asia. The company’s mainland Chinese joint venture, Ahn Luh, recently signed management contracts for new hotels in Shanghai and Shaoxing, in addition to properties in Chengdu and Shenzhen.
