Company to debut in Bangkok later this year, with another property planned for Phuket
A new luxury boutique hotel company has launched in Thailand and is planning a swift expansion of its portfolio.
137 Pillars Hotels & Resorts takes its name from the 30-suite 137 Pillars House Chiang Mai (pictured top), which becomes the first property in the new collection. The Wongphanlert family, which owns the heritage hotel, has now created a new hotel group and is planning a series of new properties in Bangkok, Phuket and further afield.
The company’s new website, 137pillarshotels.com, will go live on 17 April 2016.
The new hotel group will be led by Christopher Stafford, SilverNeedle Hospitality’s former vice president of hotel operations for Southeast Asia who now becomes 137 Pillars Hotels & Resorts’ chief operating officer. Stafford will be tasked with overseeing the launch of the company’s second property, 137 Pillars Suites & Residences Bangkok, which is scheduled to open in late 2016 on Sukhumvit Soi 39, in the centre of the Thai capital.
Set on the 23rd to 30th floors of a new tower, the hotel will offer 34 suites ranging from 70-127m² and all featuring large balconies with rocking chairs and two-person daybeds. The Bangkok hotel will also offer 179 one- and two-bedroom private residences which range in size from 40-114m² and also feature large private balconies.
Facilities will include a 32nd floor sky bar and rooftop infinity pool, plus a spa with a yoga and meditation areas. The 26th floor will also feature “pods” for late-leaving and early-arriving guests whose rooms aren’t available, with separate shower facilities.
A third hotel, 137 Pillars Estate Phuket, is then scheduled to open in early 2019 on the north peninsula of Kata Beach. It will feature 16 villas and 46 suites, all with private pools.
The original 137 Pillars House in Chiang Mai dates back to the late 1800s and was the former headquarters of the East Borneo Company. The Leonowens and Bain families lived there, and as such, every new 137 Pillars property will feature a Jack Bain’s Bar and Cigar Divan and a Louis Leonowens Club for its members.
